In general it can be concluded that the corporate responsibility concept has not yet been discovered in the Slovak context. However, certain areas within the CSR field have recently gained a lot of attention. These areas are social inclusion, equal employment, life-long training and development, efficient energy use, and developing business linkages between SME’s and LSEs. In addition, because the SME sector is still very young, attention is focussed on strengthening this sector and developing mechanisms to increase the competitiveness of the Slovak companies in the European market whilst at the same time promoting CSR.

The government of Slovakia has powers over subjects related to CSR in fields such as: local economic, social and environmental well-being.

In 2001, with a strong support from the Slovak government, a new system of public administration was launched. The main emphasis was put on handing over the powers and finances from the state to the local representation bodies. Currently, Slovakia is divided into 8 regions with the local government bodies (the regional governor and the regional council), a state regional office (chaired by the Regional Office Chairman) and a small number of specialized state offices. However, the process of transformation still continues since the best model for the distribution of finances in connection to the responsibilities and authorities that had already been transferred to the regional governments is still being determined.
